About
I became an artist in order to better process my experiences in the world. Growing up in a small rural town I did not have a lot of access to art or traditional art supplies. Because of this, I enjoy using common materials to create my work such as found images, buttons, glitter, and writing pens. With limited encounters with traditional fine art, I would look to the things I found in magazines and my family’s food pantry. I strongly identify with the idea of the pop art themes and ideals.
After completing my BFA in painting from Texas A&M-Commerce under the guidance of Michael Miller I went on to complete my MFA in Studio Art at Texas Christian University. I have accepted artists' residencies in Vermont and New York.
When I am not in my studio I am knitting sweaters for things that do not wear them.
Statement
I create new narratives that question female identity and place in society using found images from magazines and add paint, glitter, and buttons. I am inspired by news, social media, advertisements, and literature. Because I pull inspiration from a variety of sources, my narratives are open-ended and require the view to create a resolution if they choose.
Most recently, I have been exploring the place of mothers in society. I have personally experienced the effect of the pandemic and my potential to earn an income. No longer able to work full-time I am unsure what that means for me and those who identify with my situation. Are we forgotten? Dismissed? Shrugged off as collateral for a better society? I don’t know, but I continue to search for an answer.
My work has been recognized by Artnews, Dallas Morning News, Denton Record-Chronicle, and the Oak Cliff Advocate.
I have shown my work nationwide in places like Texas, Arkansas, Vermont, Brooklyn, and New York.
